I just recently finished reading the book “The One thing” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. The book was awesome and one of the best books I read so far. I learned a lot of lessons and got many realizations that I can use in my life. It was full-packed of practical and smart tips you can apply in any area of your life to get extraordinary results.

As I’ve always shared on this blog, aside from personal finance, I’m also into personal development. I like reading and watching motivational and inspirational blogs, books, talks, movies and other related things. I can sit hours watching, listening or reading those things. In return, I apply what I learn and share them to other people.
This book, “The One Thing” focused on thinking BIG but narrowing your focus on ONE SPECIFIC THING at a time. Your ONE THING.
When I say FOCUS, that means giving all your attention and energy into your ONE THING one at a time. It’s all about priorities.
It used the most effective focusing question:
“What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
Asking this question in any goals or any area of your life will definitely boost your productivity and will surely increase the quality of your results. As what the book shared, it will lead you to “extra-ordinary results”.
In this busy and distracted world, we need to set our priorities and work on them one by one. With full attention, energy and commitment. I agree with the book that giving all your attention and energy on your current task or goal will surely lead you to success in the most efficient and effective way giving you the most extra-ordinary quality of the results.
The power of this book Focusing Question — What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary? — is that it puts you in a position to take control.
Here’s a 3-part break-down of The Focusing Question: “What’s the ONE Thing I can do / such that by doing it / everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
- What’s the ONE Thing I can do… This first part of the Focusing Question is about taking action… it’s not the ONE thing you “should do”, or “could do”, or “would do” — but the ONE Thing you CAN do. The word “can” implies action, as opposed to others, which imply intention.
- … such that by doing it… this part of the question lets you know you’re about to get specific. It means that you’re about to take action on something that actually has a purpose.
- … everything else will be easier or unnecessary? this final part of the Focusing Question is about LEVERAGE. It says that when you do this ONE Thing, everything else you could do to accomplish your goal will now be either doable with less effort or no longer even necessary.
Ask the focusing question in any goals you have for any area of your life, see below examples:
Family
What’s the ONE Thing I can do for my family such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Friends
What’s the ONE Thing I can do for my friends such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Career
What’s the ONE Thing I can do for my career such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Business
What’s the ONE Thing I can do for my business such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
And any other area and goals you have
What’s the ONE Thing I can do for _______ such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Answering the focusing question will drive you down to the most important thing in your life. The most important action you can take. By asking this question and taking one step at a time, you will surely get extra-ordinary results.
If you’re into self-improvement and personal development books too, I highly recommend you read this book. I am confident that you’re going to learn so much like I did.
Have you read this book? Or do you read any other personal development or inspirational book? Kindly share your thoughts in the comment section to let other readers know. I hope this has been informative. Until next time. Cheers!
